Kraken CO-CEO David Ripley Praises Europe’s Crypto Regulation
Industry figureheads are still examining the landscape of crypto regulation in the U.S. after the demise of the CLARITY Act, which left the digital assets ecosystem without a structural bill.
David Ripley, Co-CEO of Kraken, a leading exchange in the U.S., commented on the differences between the regulatory processes of the EU and the US, and how the former has adopted a more mature approach to crypto.
In an interview, Ripley stressed that the fact that the EU approved the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework while the CLARITY Act failed is an example of how Europe approached these tasks with more maturity.
Ripley believes the political approach to crypto regulation in the U.S. is part of this issue, while in Europe, the regulatory process was quite different.
“In Europe, it’s more along the lines of ‘here’s this new technology. We’ve all got to figure out how to regulate it’ – because that’s what Europeans do. But it hasn’t been this negative, belligerent approach, which has actually been better than the volatile environment that has ensued in the US,” Ripley explained.
Furthermore, Ripley expressed frustration with the slow pace at which CLARITY advanced, pointing out that it had been in development for years, and that it was fascinating how the nation had maintained its leadership in the financial services department.
“A number of people think it’s because of their approach on how they’ve been more forward with innovation and regulating products. And in this instance, Europe tends to be leading versus following the U.S.,” Ripley concluded.
Kraken obtained a MiCA license from the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) in June 2025, allowing it to operate across the 30 member states of the European Economic Area (EEA).
